What Type of Amazon Sellers Tested Their Knowledge?
The first questions were ice breakers that gave us a picture of who was participating in the game. We asked what type of business the participants represent and the results were mostly brand owners participating at 33%, but the group included a great range of business types.
The next question was about primary retail category, for which we also saw a wide range of results, including Electronics, Home & Kitchen, and Health & Household.
The Amazon Sellers Trivia Questions
Then we got into the trivia questions. Test yourself. Read each question and take some time to consider the answer before you see how participants responded, and the correct answer.
How do you stack up against other sellers? How well do you know Amazon? Are you surprised by how well other people know it?
[18:49] Trivia Question #1
How often does Amazon update a product sales rank?
The first trivia question was about how often Amazon updates a product’s sales rank.
The image below shows what our participants think is the answer. Most people said hourly, and they were correct. Product sales rank can be very fluid, getting updated hourly.
[22:07] Trivia Question #2
What percentage of buyers are more likely to purchase on Amazon than other eCommerce sites?
The next question asked how likely buyers are to purchase on Amazon compared to other ecommerce sites. 68% of Amazon sellers knew the correct answer to this one.
89% is correct! Sellers know that buyers are very likely to purchase on Amazon as opposed to other sites.
[25:00] Trivia Question #3
What percentage of sales on Amazon are preceded by an ad click?
Our third trivia question was about how important ads are to sales on Amazon. Participants in the trivia game had a wide range of answers, pretty evenly broken out in a spread from 20% to 50%. It seems sellers aren’t clear on the answer to this one.
The correct answer is 40%! That is to say, 40% of sales on Amazon are preceded by an ad click during the buying journey. Only 33% of trivia participants got this one right.
[33:18] Trivia Question #4
If a seller got overcharged with FBA Pick & Pack fees, how far back can a seller get reimbursed?
Question 4 asked about how quickly sellers need to seek reimbursement for FBA Pick & Pack overcharge fees.
The correct answer is three months, as Amazon will only reimburse Pick & Pack fee overcharges if the reimbursement is reclaimed within that period of time. That means if there’s an overcharge that happened more than 90 days ago, it’s not possible to get reimbursed.
Most people incorrectly guessed that the claim has to be made within 18 months. Those people would lose their money. GETIDA is offering a free tool to help you avoid losing out on these reimbursements.
[38:15] Trivia Question #5
Across the top 100k search terms, which brand has the most Sponsored placements in the Electronics category on Amazon?
The next question was about which brand in the Electronics category in Amazon has the most sponsored placements. Another way of asking this is which brand’s ads show up the most on Amazon.
The correct answer is Samsung, and people knew it! 39% of sellers correctly identified Samsung as having the largest presence across search terms.
The tool we used to gather this data was our Brand Performance Matrix. You can use this tool too, and better understand the competitive landscape for your brand on Amazon.
[42:16] Trivia Question #6
How soon can Amazon sellers get paid by Amazon?
This question asked about how quickly Amazon pays sellers who’ve made successful conversions.
The correct answer is one day. There are some legacy Amazon accounts that do get paid that quickly.
Only 24% of respondents got that one right, because Amazon pays most sellers in 40 days, which is what 40% of sellers answered. (Yoni admitted this one was kind of a trick question, because what Amazon can do isn’t what it usually actually does.)
[48:25] Trivia Question #7
In an Amazon company meeting, who always has a seat at the table?
This question was about the culture at Amazon. Who always has a seat at any company meeting?
People knew this one well! It’s not Jeff Bezos. It’s correct that there’s always a seat at the table for the customer. They actually put an empty chair at the table to remind them to focus on the needs of the customer in every discussion. It’s good business advice to always remember the impact to the customer every step of the way.
[50:16] Trivia Question #8
How Much In Federal Taxes Did Amazon Pay in Years 2017-2018?
The second-to-last question asked how much Amazon paid in federal taxes during 2017-2018. The correct answer is that Amazon paid zero in federal taxes during two consecutive tax years. They did this by writing off re-investments of revenue into technology. 71% of respondents knew this fact.
[52:14] Trivia Question #9
What is Walmart’s share of the US E-Commerce market?
Most of the questions were about Amazon but we rounded out the trivia session with a question about Walmart’s marketplace.
It is correct that Walmart has 5.8% of the US ecommerce market share. More than half of Amazon sellers knew this.
We included Walmart at the end of the event because, even though its market share is much smaller than Amazon’s, Walmart.com is growing fast. During the pandemic, Walmart’s ecommerce business has grown by 74%.
That’s the last trivia question. How well did you do? Does your Amazon (and Walmart!) knowledge match up with other sellers?
